~~ Administration ~~

GROUNDS

Volunteers may wish to assist with mowing, trimming bushes, or other lawn care on the grounds surrounding the church and the parish house. You may also wish to adopt an area of the grounds for you and your family to care for.

MAINTENANCE

Volunteers help to maintain the quality and repair of the church and parish house. Work with the property manager on repairs in the area of your special talents and skills. The commitment of time: as needed, usually a few times a year.

MONEY TELLERS

Each Monday morning the tellers process the weekend collections – counting the money and entering contribution data. The commitment of time: two hours per week.

OFFICE WORKERS

Work in the parish office: greeting people when they come in, handling messages, making copies, distributing mail, and other general office tasks. Time commitment varies, but we ask for a set day and hours per week within your schedule.

STEWARDSHIP

Be a member of a team which plans and carries out the parish stewardship program of time, talent, and treasure. The commitment of time: about two hours a month.

ADULT FORMATION

Adult formation offers a wide range of opportunities for the adults of the parish for continuation of spiritual growth. An annual parish retreat; an Advent and Lenten presentation by Jim Carr; reforming of faith sharing groups. Volunteers are needed to facilitate, provide hospitality, and help in the planning of adult formation programs.

ADULT RENEWAL & INITIATION (ARI)

ARI is in the process of re-growth and will be available next program year.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CHRISTIAN FORMATION

Weekly lectionary based sessions for the 3, 4, and 5 year olds. They are held in the classrooms located in Caroluzza Hall during the 10 AM Liturgy. Catechists are volunteers who work in teams with the age level of their choice. Complete lesson plans are provided. Commitment of time: 1 hour per week every other week for a three month period. Some team planning time and occasional catechist training/meetings are also necessary.

FAMILY LEARNING

Family Learning offers monthly family catechetical sessions for the 1st – 5th graders , and for parents, who meet in the chapel while the children are in their classes. Adults and teens work with the Pastoral Associate, who oversees Christian Formation, in planning, teaching, or organizing aspects of. The Family Learning program. Areas of possible commitment: catechists, aids, Family Learning Team, and facilitators. The children meet in the classrooms located in Caroluzza Hall from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM.

BRIDGE BUILDERS

Bridge Builders is a lectionary based formation program for 6th and 7th graders. The students meet in O’Brien Hall from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM. They are bridging during these two years from elementary sessions to the high school sessions and Confirmation. The students are involved in service, worship, and social activities. Volunteers are needed to be chaperones and drivers.

 SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

Volunteers comprise a team that works with the Pastoral Associate/Christian Formation to plan and carry out special catechetical sessions in preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist, and Reconciliation. The team would also help during the liturgies when sacraments are being received by the young people.

CHILD CARE

Volunteers of all ages are needed to act as helpers in the nursery. The children in the nursery range from newborn to 2 years of age. Sometimes a baby just needs to be rocked. The time commitment: 1 hour at the weekend liturgies.

COFFEE/DONUTS/FELLOWSHIP

Teams (families and singles) coordinate hospitality after Sunday Liturgy. They pick up the donuts, prepare and serve the coffee, and clean up afterwards. The commitment of time: two hours.

ECUMENICAL MINISTRY

Meet with local religious leaders as part of the Inter-faith Council to plan ecumenical activities. The commitment of time: monthly meetings, and other events as needed.

FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY TEAM

This is a parish that enjoys getting together. The Fellowship Team makes that happen. Standards on their calendar are a Lenten meal and Easter Vigil reception, but one or two other events are usually added during the year. Commitment of time: help organize, plan, and carry out a few social events during the year; planning meetings only as needed.

OLDER ADULT ACTIVITIES

Our senior parishioners enjoy a luncheon on the second Tuesday of each month. Volunteers take turns preparing and serving the luncheon. The commitment of time: once or twice a year to plan and serve; once a month to enjoy.

SATURDAY NIGHT FELLOWSHIP

The first Saturday of each month, following the 6 PM liturgy. Need approximately four people to help with the set-up 30 minutes before liturgy and after fellowship, 45 minutes for clean-up.

SEWING & CRAFT CIRCLE

All ages coming together for fellowship, sewing, and crafts. The items we make are sold at a yearly sale and monies are given to the church. Items are also made and used for worship. The commitment of time: 3 hours on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Tuesdays of the month.

WELCOME MINISTRY

The Welcome Ministry Team introduces new members to parish life at the Church of the Resurrection. Newly registered members receive a welcome letter and an information packet through the mail. Welcome weekends are held the first weekend of every month. All new and visiting parishioners are asked to introduce themselves at the beginning of liturgy.

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

A shared ministry of parishioners 18-35 years of age, which includes social, religious, and educational events.

SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES

Journey groups are made up of 8-15 adults who gather regularly for prayer and to share life and faith stories in the light of scripture and other texts, to support one another as friends, and to reach out in service to the parish and community. Journey groups are resourced by the Pastoral Staff. There are currently two groups, the Sharecroppers and the Friday Nighters. There is also a faith sharing group formed as a bi-product of ARI. This group will meet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month in the library.

J&P MINISTRY TEAM

Meets monthly. The team's mission is to raise awareness of global and local issues. Time commitment: one meeting a month plus various events.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

Meets once a month to write letters for specific prisoners recommended by Amnesty International. Devoted to helping people imprisoned for their political or religious beliefs, and who have not advocated or used violence.

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY

Provide information, education and action channels to influence bills in Virginia State Legislature. This group works with the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, makes phone calls, and writes letters. The commitment time: as able during the General Assembly sessions.

OASIS MEALS

Resurrection is committed to feeding the hungry at the Oasis Shelter every Monday. Ingredients for soup, spaghetti, or for tuna sandwiches are needed for the lunches at Oasis. The commitment time: once or twice a year.

OASIS WORKERS

Volunteers help to prepare, serve, and clean up the noon meal at Oasis once a week; help in food pantry and thrift shop; or pickup donated food at markets. The commitment time: 2-4 hours weekly or bi-weekly.

PANTRY SUNDAY HELPERS

Transport grocery bags twice a year to Oasis in downtown Portsmouth on the Monday, following Pantry Sunday, between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Commitment time: 2 hours each occasion.

RESPECT LIFE

Provides information and education on local, state and federal legislation with regard to issues of abortion, infanticide and euthanasia. Contact our Representatives in the House and Senate regarding Right to Life Issues via e-mail or phone calls.

SHELTER MINISTRY

While the causes of homelessness are complex, there is much an individual can do to help. No matter what your skills, interests, or resources, there are ways you can make a difference for some of the men and women who are homeless. Under the auspices of the Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless (PVH) various churches and synagogues join together to provide a winter shelter. Typically, 40 – 60 homeless adults will seek shelter each night. Resurrection meets this need by opening our doors two or three weeks each year. The homeless ministry requires only one or two nights of your time each year.

WALK FOR HOPE

An annual fundraiser for the hungry in Portsmouth and worldwide. This group solicits sponsors to donate money, walk one Sunday afternoon, then collect and turn in funds. The commitment time: 2 – 3 hours a week for 2 – 4 weeks.

AIDS MINISTRY

Respond to the AIDS crisis locally through your choice of involvement: run errands, drive to doctor’s appointments, fix meals, home and hospital visits, organize projects, be a buddy, attend community dinners. The commitment of time: as able.

FUNERAL MINISTRY

Meet with the families to plan the funeral liturgy. Serve on a rotating basis. Training is provided. The time commitment: as needed. Volunteers are also needed to prepare and serve food for receptions following the funerals. The commitment time: 3-4 times a year.

COMMUNION WITH THE HOMEBOUND

A wonderful expression of Christ’s outreach to those who long for Him but are unable to join our parish community in the Eucharist celebration. To be bearer of Christ to them is a blessing for one and all. The commitment time: depends on need and schedule – both yours and that of the ministry, but usually one hour a month.

VISITING MINISTRY

Bringing the "Spirit of Resurrection" to those who are ill in the hospital, nursing home, or at home. A smiling face and a friendly conversation help the sick to feel a sense of belonging and connection with the community where they are unable to be physically present. Commitment time: depends on need and schedule, both yours and that of the ministry.

TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY

Providing a "lift" to our weekend liturgy for those who are no longer able to drive. Commitment time: one or two Saturdays or Sundays per month depending on need.

ART AND ENVIRONMENT

Different seasons of the Church year provide opportunities to decorate the church and grounds. The members of this group use their creative talents to enhance the worship center by various forms of art expression. The time commitment varies, but is greater during the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter seasons.

AUDIO-VISUAL

There are two areas to choose from in this ministry. Before the weekend slides are selected and assembled to be used at the liturgies. Volunteers may also participate as a projectionist by operating the lights, microphones and slides during the liturgy (no special talent is required for the projectionist volunteers). The time commitment is about once a month.

BREAD BAKERS

Bake the bread used at the Eucharist as scheduled. Recipe furnished. The time commitment is about once every two or three months.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD

Adult and teen volunteers lead children in celebration of the Liturgy of the Word during the Saturday and Sunday liturgies. Scheduled year round on a rotating basis, depending on the number of volunteers. There are two groups: 1st and 2nd graders, and 3rd, 4th, 5th graders. Resources and training provided.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS

Eucharistic ministers are asked to make a commitment to serve at the liturgies and assist with distributing the Eucharist. Training is usually held once per year. Time commitment: once or twice a month at the liturgy the minister normally attends.

LAUNDER ALTAR LINENS

Volunteers pickup weekend liturgical laundry (purificators, altar cloths, etc.) to wash, iron, and return before the following weekend. The time commitment: once every two months.

LECTORS

Persons trained through special workshops once a year proclaim the scripture readings at the liturgies and, if they choose, can be involved in special dramatic interpretations during special seasons such as Christmas and Easter. The time commitment is once or twice monthly at the liturgy lector normally attends.

LITURGY HOSPITALITY

Coordinate hospitality at liturgy as you are scheduled: greeters, offertory collections, bulletin disbursement. The time commitment is monthly at the liturgy normally attended.

LITURGICAL MINISTRY TEAM

Meets once a month to coordinate the worship services and ministries. The time commitment is 2-6 hours per month. Team meets to plan the weekly and seasonal liturgical celebrations. Typically there is one smaller team for each season and 3-4 to cover ordinary time. After reflecting on the scripture readings, the members discern the theme for the week or season., prepare prayers of the faithful, and give input to audio-visual, music, and environment aspects of the liturgy.

MUSIC

This ministry includes the choir, instrumentalists and pianist. Persons are asked to commit to a weekly liturgy and special occasions as well as rehearsal each Wednesday evening. The Saturday evening music group rehearses before each liturgy at 5 PM. Cantors, instrumentalists, and pianists are auditioned.

SACRISTANS

Members of this ministry are responsible for making certain that books, the bread and wine, the cups, candles, etc. are prepared for Eucharistic Liturgy, and for cleaning up after liturgy. The time commitment is once a month at the liturgy normally attended.

HORIZONS

A lectionary based formation program for 8th, 9th, and 10th grade youth. Horizons strives to help prepare these young people for a fuller role in the church. Regular meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month.

Volunteers are needed to fill roles such as catechist aides. Normal time of service would be October – May.

CONFIRMATION

A lectionary based formation program where a team of catechists work with candidates to explore the meaning of their faith commitment. The program is retreat based, requiring candidates to complete 3 retreats during the course of the year. Participation in Horizons in 10th grade is a prerequisite for Confirmation preparation. Regular meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. Volunteers are needed to fill roles such as cooks/drivers for retreats/service projects, chaperones, etc. Normal time of service would be October-May.

YOUTH MINISTRY

A social and service based program for 8th-12th grade youth of the parish and their friends. Regular meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. Meeting times may vary depending on the activity. Volunteers are needed to fill roles such as chaperones, drivers, activity facilitators, cooks, etc. Normal time of service would be September – July.
